Understanding Diabetic Retinopathy:
Why Eye Exams Matter for People with Diabetes
Diabetes can affect multiple parts of the body, including the eyes. One of the most common eye conditions associated with diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, which involves changes in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye.
These changes may develop gradually and are not always noticeable in the early stages. Because of this, regular medical eye examinations are an important part of ongoing diabetes care.
What Is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy refers to changes that can occur in the small blood vessels of the retina over time in individuals with diabetes.
In the early stages, patients may not experience symptoms. As changes progress, vision may be affected. Routine eye examinations allow for monitoring and evaluation of retinal health over time.
Organizations such as the American Diabetes Association and the National Eye Institute recommend regular eye exams as part of comprehensive diabetes management.
Medical Eye Exams vs. Routine Vision Checks
A standard vision exam typically focuses on determining a glasses or contact lens prescription.
A medical eye examination, on the other hand, is designed to evaluate the health of the eye, including the retina and optic nerve.
At Shah Eye Center, diabetic eye evaluations are performed within a medical setting by an Ophthalmologist/Optometrist, allowing for a more comprehensive assessment of internal eye health.
What to Expect During a Diabetic Eye Exam
A diabetic eye exam is more detailed than a routine vision screening and may include several components:
Comprehensive Medical History
Your medical and ocular history, including diabetes management and any visual symptoms, will be reviewed.
Visual Acuity and Eye Pressure Testing
These tests help establish a baseline for vision and overall eye health.
Pupil Dilation
Eye drops are used to dilate the pupils, allowing for a clearer view of the retina.
- Temporary blurred vision may occur especially at near distance
- Light sensitivity is common for several hours
Retinal Examination and Imaging
The retina is examined using specialized equipment. Imaging may be performed to document findings and assist in monitoring over time.
Evaluation by an Ophthalmologist/Optometrist
An ophthalmologist/Optometrist evaluates the findings and discusses observations. If appropriate, further evaluation may be performed by a retina specialist within the practice.
Duration of the Visit
Due to dilation and detailed evaluation, the visit may take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours or longer, depending on the individual case and testing required.
Treatment Approaches
If retinal changes are identified, management options may vary depending on the findings.
Treatment approaches that may be considered include:
- Observation and ongoing monitoring
- Anti-inflammatory eyedrops
- Laser-based procedures
- Intravitreal (injection) therapies
- Surgical procedures, when appropriate
Any treatment recommendations are based on a comprehensive medical evaluation and discussion between the patient and physician.
The Importance of Specialized Care
Evaluation by an Ophthalmologist/Optometrist and, when appropriate, a retina specialist, allows for a more detailed assessment of retinal conditions.
At Shah Eye Center, patients have access to:
- Medical eye evaluations
- Advanced diagnostic imaging
- Retina-focused care when indicated
This integrated approach supports continuity of care within a single practice.
Preventive Eye Care for Patients with Diabetes
Even in the absence of symptoms, routine eye exams are recommended for individuals with diabetes.
Regular evaluations help:
- Monitor eye health over time
- Identify changes that may not yet affect vision
- Support coordination with overall medical care
